How Stockport’s houses
take on moisture.
01The housing stock
SK1–SK16+
Stockport’s older housing is mostly red-brick Victorian and Edwardian terraces — through Edgeley, Heaton Norris, Shaw Heath and Cheadle Heath — with larger villas in the Heatons and Davenport. Interwar and post-war semis fill Cheadle, Bramhall and Hazel Grove, and the eastern edges towards Marple and Romiley bring stone cottages and steeper, more exposed sites.
02What we commonly find
Survey experience+
In solid-walled terraces the commonest cause is rain getting through weathered brick, failed pointing, chimneys and leaking gutters, often misread as rising damp. Cellars and lower ground floors near the Mersey and Goyt valleys can take on ground water. In cavity-walled semis, retrofitted cavity insulation, bridged cavities and cold spots behind condensation and mould are worth checking.
03What the survey involves
Evidence, not sales+
We distinguish between rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation — the step most damp diagnoses skip — using moisture profiling, a methodical look at external ground levels, rainwater goods and ventilation, thermal imaging where conditions suit, and timber decay checks. You get a written report explaining the actual moisture source, what needs doing and what doesn’t. Full scope: independent damp and timber surveys
Damp proofing in Stockport
Been quoted for damp proofing? Get the cause confirmed first.
Most damp-proofing quotes in Stockport are for one of three things: a chemical damp-proof course injected into the wall, tanking or a membrane, or hacking off and replastering with a salt-resistant plaster. Each has its place — but only when the cause really is the one it treats. In older solid-walled houses, damp is far more often rain getting in, ground or paving built up against the wall, leaking gutters and pipes, or condensation. None of those is cured by injection.
As an independent damp specialist we sell no treatment, so a survey from us tells you what the wall actually needs — sometimes the work quoted, often something simpler and cheaper. Before you sign, ask the contractor three questions: how was the cause diagnosed (an electrical meter on plaster is not proof of rising damp), what else was ruled out, and what exactly the guarantee covers.

Common questions · Stockport
Asked before booking.
How much does a damp survey cost in Stockport?
It is a fixed fee for the specific property, based on its size, how much of it is affected and whether limited opening-up is needed. We confirm the scope and the fee before you commit.
Do I need a damp specialist or an independent damp surveyor?
Many "damp specialists" are companies that also sell the treatment. An independent damp surveyor has nothing to sell, so the diagnosis is about the cause rather than a product. That distinction often decides whether you need treatment at all.
Can cavity wall insulation cause damp in a Stockport semi?
It can, on exposed walls or where the cavity is bridged or the installation was poor. We check for the tell-tale patterns and explain the options, including what to raise with the installer or guarantee provider.
Which areas of Stockport do you cover?
All of SK1 to SK16 — including Edgeley, the Heatons, Cheadle, Bramhall, Hazel Grove, Marple, Romiley and Hyde.
