How Sheffield’s houses
take on moisture.
01The housing stock
S1–S14, S17 and surrounds+
Sheffield is famously hilly, and its houses are built into the slopes: Victorian brick terraces climbing through Walkley, Crookes, Hillsborough and Heeley, stone and brick villas in Nether Edge, Broomhill and Ecclesall, and interwar and post-war estates on the outer edges. Many terraces have cellars cut into the hillside.
02What we commonly find
Survey experience+
On sloping streets, ground and surface water flow downhill and build up against rear walls and cellars dug into the slope, so damp at the back of the house and in cellars is a common complaint. Retaining walls and raised gardens can bridge damp proof courses. On the higher, western side of the city, exposed walls take driving rain. As elsewhere, much of the low-level damp sold as "rising damp" turns out to have a different cause.
03What the survey involves
Evidence, not sales+
We distinguish between rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation — the step most damp diagnoses skip — using moisture profiling, a methodical look at external ground levels, rainwater goods and ventilation, thermal imaging where conditions suit, and timber decay checks. You get a written report explaining the actual moisture source, what needs doing and what doesn’t. Full scope: independent damp and timber surveys
Damp proofing in Sheffield
Been quoted for damp proofing? Get the cause confirmed first.
Most damp-proofing quotes in Sheffield are for one of three things: a chemical damp-proof course injected into the wall, tanking or a membrane, or hacking off and replastering with a salt-resistant plaster. Each has its place — but only when the cause really is the one it treats. In older solid-walled houses, damp is far more often rain getting in, ground or paving built up against the wall, leaking gutters and pipes, or condensation. None of those is cured by injection.
As an independent damp specialist we sell no treatment, so a survey from us tells you what the wall actually needs — sometimes the work quoted, often something simpler and cheaper. Before you sign, ask the contractor three questions: how was the cause diagnosed (an electrical meter on plaster is not proof of rising damp), what else was ruled out, and what exactly the guarantee covers.

Common questions · Sheffield
Asked before booking.
How much does a damp survey cost in Sheffield?
It is a fixed fee for the specific property, based on its size, how much of it is affected and whether limited opening-up is needed. We confirm the scope and the fee before you commit.
Why is the back wall or cellar of my Sheffield house damp?
On a slope, the ground behind the house is often higher than the floor inside, and water moving downhill collects against the rear wall and the cellar. Drainage, ground levels and retaining walls are usually the first things to look at, before any talk of damp-proofing.
Is your damp survey independent?
Yes. We do not sell or carry out damp-proofing, injection or tanking, so our only job is finding the actual cause and telling you the simplest fix that will work.
Which areas of Sheffield do you cover?
Most S postcodes, including S1 to S14, S17 and the surrounding districts — Walkley, Crookes, Hillsborough, Nether Edge, Heeley, Broomhill and Ecclesall among them.
