How Huddersfield’s houses
take on moisture.

01

The housing stock

HD1–HD9+

Huddersfield and its valleys are built mostly of local sandstone and gritstone: weavers’ cottages and terraces through the Colne and Holme Valleys, through-terraces and back-to-backs in Lockwood, Crosland Moor, Paddock and Marsh, and substantial Victorian villas in Edgerton and Lindley. Many houses are cut into the hillside, with cellars or lower rooms whose back walls hold up the ground behind them.

02

What we commonly find

Survey experience+

Driving rain off the Pennines is the main pressure on these solid stone walls, and it gets in where cement pointing, cement render or plastic masonry paint has replaced the original lime and traps moisture in the stone. Walls that retain earth at the back of hillside houses are damp by nature and need managing, not injecting. Cellars, condensation in single-aspect back-to-backs, and cavity insulation retrofitted into exposed walls make up most of the rest.

03

What the survey involves

Evidence, not sales+

We distinguish between rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation — the step most damp diagnoses skip — using moisture profiling, a methodical look at external ground levels, rainwater goods and ventilation, thermal imaging where conditions suit, and timber decay checks. You get a written report explaining the actual moisture source, what needs doing and what doesn’t. Full scope: independent damp and timber surveys

Damp proofing in Huddersfield

Been quoted for damp proofing? Get the cause confirmed first.

Most damp-proofing quotes in Huddersfield are for one of three things: a chemical damp-proof course injected into the wall, tanking or a membrane, or hacking off and replastering with a salt-resistant plaster. Each has its place — but only when the cause really is the one it treats. In older solid-walled houses, damp is far more often rain getting in, ground or paving built up against the wall, leaking gutters and pipes, or condensation. None of those is cured by injection.

As an independent damp specialist we sell no treatment, so a survey from us tells you what the wall actually needs — sometimes the work quoted, often something simpler and cheaper. Before you sign, ask the contractor three questions: how was the cause diagnosed (an electrical meter on plaster is not proof of rising damp), what else was ruled out, and what exactly the guarantee covers.

Read before you pay for treatment

Most walls sold a damp-proofing treatment don’t need one. Try our damp checker, or start with telling the three types of damp apart, what rising damp really is, and how to treat damp walls by fixing the cause.

Common questions · Huddersfield

Asked before booking.

Do you carry out damp surveys in Huddersfield?

Yes — Huddersfield is where the practice is based, so the whole HD postcode area, from the town centre out to Marsden, Holmfirth and Kirkburton, is on our doorstep. We can often inspect at short notice.

I have a damp-proofing quote for my Huddersfield house. Should I get a second opinion?

If the quote is for chemical injection or tanking on a stone wall, yes. Most damp in Huddersfield’s stone houses comes from rain penetration, ground levels or trapped moisture, which injection does not fix. An independent survey identifies the cause before you spend money on treatment.

Why is the back wall of my hillside house always damp?

In many Pennine houses the back wall of the lower floor or cellar is holding back the ground behind it, so moisture from the soil is always present. It needs to be managed with drainage, ventilation and the right breathable finishes — not sealed, which usually drives the damp somewhere else.

Which areas of Huddersfield do you cover?

All of HD1 to HD9 — including Lindley, Marsh, Edgerton, Crosland Moor, Lockwood, Almondbury, Kirkburton, Slaithwaite, Marsden, Meltham, Honley and Holmfirth.
